The Hare Krishnas in Britain - An Historical and Contemporary Look at Groups, Branches, Sub-Branches and Offshoots (see below)

Britain's Hare Krishna movement has always been more diverse than we ever thought.

From the first wave of missionaries who visited London in the 1930's to today's myriad of maths (missionary groups) and sangas, below is an illustrative look at all of those groups in one diagram.

This is the second version of the map, with the first being published in 2022.

A huge thank you to everyone who got in touch after our 'shout out' for updates in the Summer of 2025 (You can see the video here)

Taken from research conducted for the book The Hare Krishnas in Britain (2021), the image below shows all those maths that have been, or who currently are, active in the UK.

A few things to note :

  1. This diagram applies to the UK only

  2. This is NOT a map of succession, but rather a map of branches, sub-branches and offshoots (gurus/acharyas are only included from the second generation onwards if they founded new maths)

  3. This is an evolving map and initiative currently being run by The Hare Krishna Project

  4. We're happy to be corrected on dates and factual information

  5. Details about all of the maths on the chart can be found in The Hare Krishnas in Britain book, available now on Amazon.
