What is Krishna Consciousness?

Krishna Consciousness can be simply understood as always remembering Krishna (or ‘God’).

Krishna Consciousness, also known as ‘bhakti yoga’, is a lifelong process of understanding how to love Krishna and how to serve Him. Krishna is a person, a spiritual person.

The Vedic texts (where the philosophy of bhakti finds its foundation) say that every living entity is a soul without distinction. Each soul has the same qualities as God, however the quantity and extent of those qualities are far different and far lower than those of God's.

Krishna can love, so can souls to some extent. Krishna can eat, so can souls to some extent. Krishna has feelings, so do souls to some extent.

Knowing that God is a person, the supreme spiritual person, it the first important step to developing love for Him. In this age, as taught by Srila Prabhupada and other spiritual teachers, the best way to grow in our spiritual relationship with Krishna is through the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare

Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

“Devotional service begins with the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and side by side trying to understand Krishna in truth.” – Srila Prabhupada, Bhagavad Gita As It Is 9.20

“The sixteen names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra: hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare, hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare destroy all the inauspiciousness of the age of Kali. This is the conclusion of all the Vedas” – Kali Santarana Upanisad

Krishna Consciousness is the never-ending, blissful spiritual practice of loving, serving, and always remembering Krishna.
